Illustrative Tattoos in Chicago

Tattoo work shaped by drawing, symbolism, and the body.

Elisha Marie creates illustrative tattoos in Chicago for people drawn to artwork with personality, movement, and meaning.

Her tattoo practice grows directly from her background as an illustrator. Years of drawing people, studying gesture, making portraits, and developing a visual language around femininity, memory, transformation, and symbolism continue to shape the way she works on skin.

The result is tattoo work that feels drawn rather than assembled.

What Makes a Tattoo Illustrative?

Illustrative tattooing begins with image-making.

Rather than following one fixed tattoo style, Elisha builds each piece through composition, line, proportion, gesture, and the relationship between the drawing and the body.

That can include:

  • figurative work
  • botanicals
  • feminine archetypes
  • symbolic imagery
  • fine line
  • black and grey
  • lettering and handwriting
  • memory-based work
  • surreal or unusual imagery
  • custom combinations of several visual ideas

The common thread is Elisha’s hand.

Feminine Archetypes

Women appear throughout Elisha’s work as layered, changing, and complex figures.

Her sketchbooks and flash often return to feminine archetypes, bodies, transformation, emotion, and the tension between softness and strength.

These ideas can become portraits, symbolic figures, fragments of the body, or more abstract compositions.

If you are drawn to this part of Elisha’s work, you can begin with a custom concept or choose from available flash.

Memory & Symbolism

Some tattoos begin with something deeply personal.

A flower connected to a person.

A handwritten phrase.

A photograph.

A sonogram.

An object from childhood.

A symbol whose meaning is private.

Elisha works with these materials as visual starting points, translating them into artwork that can live naturally on the body.

Fine Line, Lettering & Black and Grey

Elisha’s illustrative approach also runs through several tattoo styles.

Fine Line

Delicate linework can keep a piece restrained while still allowing the drawing to carry detail and character.

Lettering & Handwriting

Words, signatures, phrases, and personal handwriting can become tattoos with particular attention to spacing, flow, and placement.

Black & Grey

Black and grey allows line, tone, contrast, and texture to do the visual work without relying on color.

The Drawing Comes First

Before tattooing, Elisha’s practice was built through illustration.

She studied illustration at New York City’s High School of Art & Design, continued into fine art at SUNY Oneonta, created live digital portraits for years, and exhibited and taught before bringing that drawing practice into tattooing.

While living in New York, drawing people on the subway became a daily practice that sharpened her attention to gesture, posture, expression, and the details that make a person feel recognizable.

That history matters because illustrative tattooing is not a decorative category added onto her work.

It is where her drawing practice has landed on skin.
